Abandonia is something special. It is a library of old games for you to download. It is like an old gaming arcade with all the old games in their original format. Abandonia is a place where you can find great old games and have fun four hours and years.
To protect our independence, we are dependent of our friends using the site. We run on donations averaging around 6 USD (5 Euro). If everyone reading this gave the price of a cup of coffee, our fundraiser would be made easier. If Abandonia is useful to you, take one minute to keep it online for another year. Please help us forget fundraising and get back to Abandonia.
Warcraft II is what you think it would be—an update and improvement over Warcraft and a predecessor to Warcraft III. It improves on Warcraft's already solid graphics and sound. It includes videos during the campaign, and it amends some of the more lackluster gameplay elements from the original Warcraft.
Most notably, the player can now select more than one unit at a time, up to nine. Unfortunately, it isn't until Warcraft III (or the Battle.net edition of this second instalment) that players are able to hotkey or group certain units together.
So in Warcraft II you will always have to click the units you wish to command; thus, it is difficult, but not impossible, to coordinate large or multi-pronged attacks as well as a coordinated defense. However, clever use of the other resources in the game can overcome these shortcomings, such as the use of patrols and hotkeying positions on the map to recall later. This is the DOS version of the game. To run it, you must use DOSBox and start WAR2.bat, and the game must be mounted so that there's a C:WAR2 directory visible inside DOSBox.
Due to the nature of the solution used to make both the base game and the expansion available as a single package, this download will not work outside of DOSBox without changes. You can get around that by burning the contents of the TOD and DP directories to a CD for each (TOD = Tides Of Darkness, DP = Beyond the Dark Portal) and changing the CD drive letter in War2.ini.This version is a rip. It does not contain the Redbook Audio music tracks from the game discs (the reason music works is that the game also contains a MIDI version of it). Warcraft IIPosted on: 2013-06-16 byAs with most things, timing is everything. This game was released in 1995 when DOS/Win3.11 systems were still prevalent. Just as a stand alone 1 player game it was excellent, a nicely rendered and challenging real-time-strategy game. Graphics were great for its day, and the sounds and speech of the characters you ordered around were great.

I recall setting up a small Lan to try multi-player Warcraft II - wow what an addiction that was. One PC had to 'host' the game (actually have the cd in cdrom) while, in this case, the other two machines had the game installed but no cd needed. It was awesome. You can still achieve this by having all three pc's load IPX/SPX on their network cards and plug all 3 pc's into a hub.But I digress.
Bottom line - great game standing alone, beyond great when playing friends on a network.
